Daktronics Rises on Strategic Move into MicroLED Display Technology
Acquisition of X Display Company's assets and key personnel positions the display maker to capture a slice of the projected $12 billion next-generation screen market.
Daktronics Inc. (NASDAQ: DAKT) shares saw a modest gain in Tuesday trading after the company announced a strategic acquisition of intellectual property, equipment, and key personnel from X Display Company (XDC), accelerating its push into the high-growth MicroLED market.
Shares of the South Dakota-based display manufacturer traded up 1.2% to $18.91 in the afternoon session. The move signals a significant strategic effort by the company, known primarily for its large-scale stadium and arena video boards, to pivot towards next-generation, ultra-high-resolution display technologies.
The deal provides Daktronics with a portfolio of proprietary mass-transfer processes and MicroLED fabrication technologies. Perhaps most critically, the company has hired 15 experienced engineers and leaders from XDC, a specialist in the field. The acquisition builds upon an existing relationship, where Daktronics has been a strategic investor in XDC since 2020 to advance MicroLED development.
"We believe this move further strengthens our competitive position and will allow us to provide current and future customers globally with the next generation of display technology," said Brad Wiemann, Daktronics' Interim President and CEO, in a statement released Tuesday.
The acquisition squarely targets the rapidly expanding Narrow Pixel Pitch (NPP) market, a segment that includes MicroLED applications. This sector is projected to swell to a $12 billion industry by 2029, according to market research firm Futuresource. MicroLEDs represent a technological leap forward from current LED and OLED screens, offering higher brightness, greater energy efficiency, and superior contrast.
For Daktronics, a company with a market capitalization of approximately $911 million, the move is a calculated expansion beyond its traditional strongholds. While it dominates the market for large-format displays in sports venues, this acquisition provides the technology and expertise to compete in the lucrative indoor and professional audio-visual (ProAV) markets for commercial and corporate clients.
"This positions Daktronics to advance our large-scale NPP product offerings and provide a pathway to service smaller volume display opportunities with medium-sized display solutions," Wiemann added, highlighting the new market segments the technology unlocks.
The integration of XDC's expert team is expected to immediately accelerate Daktronics' research and development timeline. "It also gives us an experienced team of engineers in the field of MicroLED and MicroIC technologies that we believe reinforces our commitment to technical excellence and innovation," Wiemann noted.
Investors will be watching for the first fruits of this acquisition. The company has already signaled its intent to showcase its advancing capabilities, with plans to demonstrate new 0.7- and 0.4-millimeter MicroLED products currently in development at the InfoComm 2025 trade show. This strategic acquisition arms Daktronics with the internal expertise and intellectual property to challenge established players and capture new growth opportunities in the next evolution of digital displays.
